A look inside the sketchbook
The sketchbook is a place where Andy has the most freedom of expression. He uses his sketchbook to develop and refine ideas for a plethora of projects.
Below are several images taken from Andy’s current sketchbook. These images depict a wolf-like dog, a cave girl, and two different iterations of mammoths.
The first two images show character ideas with the working title ‘The first Hooman’. The premise behind these two characters has been to explore the relationship between man and man’s best friend.
Images three and four show mammoths in different situations. Image three shows mammoths playing football at Stonehenge and was inspired by the most recent World Cup. Additionally, image four shows a mammoth drinking tea with the working idea title ‘You won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s good’
An insight into Andy’s process
It all starts with an initial idea. Ideas can come from anywhere, and the spontaneity of that part of the process is what keeps it exciting. Once an idea is formed, the next stage for development is to sketch out a character sheet or several to get a feel for the characters.
Next, the process develops into the written word, and the script is created, usually through several iterations.
Once the script has been completed, the next stage is to storyboard it in its entirety to figure out the spread compositions.
Then, finally, selected spreads are chosen to showcase the range of compositions that show the most variation and character, and these are drawn and painted.
