‘The star goes on top’ is a piece inspired by the festive period and my love of ice-age creatures. My process in creating this piece started with an in-depth sketch of the scene. Then I started building up the layers of watercolour paint, starting with the lightest areas first. The areas that required more layers were the Christmas tree and the Woolly Rhino itself. Finally, once the watercolour paint had dried, I added the final embellishments. This included the small areas of snow using acrylic paint and adding the finer details in the fur and other regions using high-grade coloured pencils.

‘Take the step’ is one of my personal favourite pieces that I have created because it is an inspiration and a reminder to myself to keep moving forward. I composed the piece in this way with the visible cloud to show that you should always move forward, no matter how hard the road ahead may seem. I created this piece using my signature process of drawing out the complete sketch first to ensure the composition works, then I will build up the watercolour paint in layers, before finally moving on to adding the acrylic and coloured pencil embellishments where necessary.
